FHBC CommUnity News September 1st, 2014
Faith and Life Tracks
Beginning on September 3, spend your Wednesday nights with us as we discover new ways to deepen our faith together. A variety of classes and groups will be available for all age groups, so take your pick! These are the classes being offered this Fall:
Financial Peace University
Forest Hills will be hosting a course in Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University. Topics include: super saving, dumping debt, insurance, investments, retirement, and more. Click HERE for more information. This class will begin on September 17.
Through biblical teaching and real-life application, this study teaches that believers do not have to live in weakness. God is stronger than every struggle you will ever face. Facilitated by Whitney Goulding, this women's Bible study lasts 7 weeks; cost is $14.
Just Walk Across the Room
Just a few steps and a friendly hello may be all it takes to change someone's life - and their eternity! And the good news is, it has more to do with taking a genuine interest in another person and listening to their story than it does with learning evangelism tactics and techniques. Led by Neil Westbrook, this study lasts 7 weeks.
Would you like to learn to paint or create other art forms? Arty Party encourages participants to create original works of art in a fun environment! All levels of experience are welcome, and instruction is provided. Led by Jerry Hester, this class meets in the Shepherd Studio (Hood House) from 6:00-8:30 p.m.
Out and About
Looking to get out and about on Wednesday nights? Bring your walking shoes, strollers, and some friends as we get moving and check out some of the neat sights in our Forest Hills neighborhood that are within walking distance from the church. Walking, talking, and more! Led by Tyler Ward, this class lasts 7 weeks.
Picnic-Style Dinner: Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 5 p.m.
We're kicking off the new season of Faith and Life Tracks with a picnic- style dinner on Wed., Sept. 3. Stop by the Dining Hall and pick up your dinner in a bag (sandwich, chips, cookies, and drink), and then choose a spot in the church to enjoy your meal. Tables will be set up in the Gathering Place, Attic, Children's Area, etc. Take this opportunity to share a fun meal and fellowship with one another. We hope to see you then!
Intergenerational Ladies' Bible Study
Our Friday morning Intergenerational Ladies' Bible Study will begin Friday, September 19th, and last until the spring. We will be studying Beth Moore's newest Bible Study: Children of the Day, a study of 1 and 2 Thessalonians. We will meet from 10:00-11:30 a.m. in the Parlor, just off the Gathering Place. Our study will be led by Charlotte Holmes. Please contact Cheryl Hibbs at email@example.com for more information or to sign up.
Open House: Gallery Show & Studio Tour
Wednesday, Sept. 10th
We're excited to show you the new home of the FHBC Arts Ministry! Come create and enjoy a delicious banana split. Then tour the special exhibit, which will be featuring paintings of ice cream and desserts. You'll see where we paint and perhaps find a place just for you at Shepherd's Studio. We'll be looking for you there!
WIT Dining Hall Update
Have you seen the Dining Hall recently? There have been over 200 hours of volunteer labor spent painting the hallway, installing and painting baseboards, removing the stage, cleaning and prepping the walls for painting, along with various other tasks. Thank you to all of the volunteers!
Painting in the Dining Hall began the week of August 24th. We are excited about the progress that has occurred. Next time you come to the church, take a few minutes to look at the work that has been accomplished!
All preschoolers and children through 5th grade promoted to new classrooms on Sunday, August 24th. It was a very exciting day, and we are thankful for all of our Sunday School teachers! However, there is still an URGENT need for 3 preschool teachers on Sunday mornings:
-One teacher for the 2-year-olds class
-Two teachers for the 3- and 4-year-olds class
Please prayerfully consider teaching in one of the above classrooms. If you are interested or have questions, contact Susan Wray or Mary Weaver.
To celebrate this new school year, the Forest Hills Children's Ministry invites you to a playground party on Sunday, Sept. 7th. Children and their families can come to the playground after worship for food, fun, and fellowship. Sandwiches will be provided for lunch, and there will be popsicles for dessert. We hope to see you there!

Volunteers Needed: Professional Business English
Are you a business woman or man? Do you ever notice the nuances of vocabulary, tone, and delivery of the English you speak every day? Many Internationals are eager to practice Professional Business English in conversation. This is an open door to build relationships and share the love of Christ through meeting a need with a specialized skill YOU have!
We have developed a curriculum and are looking for a business person to co-teach this class Wednesdays from 6pm-7:45pm through the school year. Please pray as the ESL Team is searching to meet this need. If you are interested in assisting with this ministry opportunity, contact Jason Payne.
Local Missions Opportunity
A local missions opportunity has come to us where we can help our neighbors only 2.3 miles away. The Palms Apartments are scheduled for demolition and re-development at the end of this year, and the largely immigrant community living there needs help relocating, transferring children to new schools, and prayer.
Please contact Jason as soon as possible to help lead this international ministry opportunity and reach out to the neighbors in our own backyard!
Women on Mission
Attention all women! You are invited to the WOM luncheon meeting on Tuesday, September 2, at 11:30 a.m in the Attic, Room A-300. Come hear Ngoma and some of the mission team share about their recent experiences in the Congo! Lunch will be $5.
September is NC Missions Emphasis
September is State Missions month. A portion of our gifts to the Great Commission Offering is a vital lifeline to support a number of ministry and missions initiatives, such as NC Baptist Men who provide disaster relief, medical/dental clinics, and aviation ministry; Deep Impact mission camps; and church planting.
The theme is "Choose Now," based on Luke 21:10-13: "There will be great earthquakes and in various places famines... terrors and great signs from heaven... This will be your opportunity to bear witness." Giving to State Missions is a strategic way NC Baptists can show God's grace to a lost world.
Ukraine Missions Opportunity
In 2004 Forest Hills began partnering with the Ark children's rehabilitation facility in Kiev, Ukraine. Due to the war in Ukraine, we can no longer send teams to Kiev. However, we can provide urgent financial assistance.
The buildings on the Ark campus have traditionally been heated using hot water supplied by a city-owned boiler plant, which will not operate this winter! The Ark must find another means of heating. The Ark management has selected a new system. The only issue is the very high capital expense. Forest Hills can help.
Our church has a history of helping during crises, whether supplying labor for cleanup after a hurricane or donating to the Sri Lankan tsunami relief effort.
Forest Hills will promote a special offering throughout September to assist the Ark in supplying heat for this upcoming winter. To participate, make your check out to FHBC and write Ukraine Fund on the memo line.
Please help the Ark keep the children warm this winter! For questions, contact Rogers Farr.
Thank You Notes
The Forest Hills family has received two thank you notes, one from each of the most recent residents of the missionary house: the Williams family and the Wyatt family. These notes are displayed in the hallway where the Sunday School boxes are located.
Outreach Opportunity at Fred Olds Elementary
A new school year is here! Being directly across the street from Fred Olds Elementary School, Forest Hills has a wonderful opportunity to provide staff and student support for the school year. This support will take various forms, including mentoring and tutoring students. Please prayerfuly consider joining this ministry as we share Christ's love to our neighbors. To volunteer or to learn more, please contact Shannon Bellamy.
